Burry Port RFC Blacks Secure Vital Win

Burry Port RFC travelled to Mumbles RFC for a game many were calling a must win for both sides.

Burry Port RFC were buoyed by the return of Club Captain Andy Frances after a lengthy time out with injury since the 1st game of the season.

Both teams knew how important this game was but it was Burry Port who started the brighter despite playing against the wind in the 1st half.

Mumbles missed a few long-range penalty attempts and filled to use the wind to their advantage. Burry Port looked to have broken the deadlock when an inside ball put winger Adam Davies through a gap and certain to score only for the ref to pull it back for a forward pass. Burry Port’s disappointment didn’t last long though as number 8 Dylan Evans powered over near the posts and with Ben Williams adding the conversion led 7-0.

Again the Home team had chances to close the gap with some more shots at goal but the kicks continued to fall the wrong side of the posts to Burry Port’s relief.

Halftime score Mumbles 0 – 7 Burry Port.

With the wind in their backs Burry Port controlled the game quite well, a rock solid scrum with 18 year olds prop Adam Thomas and hooker Taran Galbraith excelling and  replacement scrum half Ashley Phillips making plenty of good decisions and directing the pack well, meant the Home team struggled to clear their lines and were being forced to concede penalties,  Burry Port RFC took advantage by kicking 2 attempts at goal to take a 13-0 lead.

However with 20 minutes remaining there was still time for Mumbles to get back into the game, and with Burry Port a bit sloppy with possession and down to 14 after a yellow card they had some opportunities to close the gap. A turnover in Burry Ports half led to a break down the wing and Mumbles crossing in the corner for a well taken try, importantly for Burry Port the conversion sailed wide to keep them two scores ahead and Mumbles just out of bonus point range.

The last 10 minutes was a tense affair with Mumbles going all out and Burry Port putting in a huge defensive effort to keep the Home team out and deny them an important losing point which could prove vital come end of the season.

Final score Mumbles 5 – 13 Burry Port.
